Repaired Clun Chair
Ash - 450x500x750
An exploration of visible mending in wood.
I have long admired visible mending practices in other crafts such as ceramics and knitting. I believe repair is an act of care and should be celebrated, not concealed.
The original chair was a handmade, antique Clisset-style chair, which was in pieces when it was gifted to me. I spliced in and replaced only what was needed to make it structurally sound again.
The aim of a traditional repair process is to restore a piece to it’s original state, and practitioners go to great lengths to render their work invisible. In this piece the intervention is celebrated by using a pale ash for the repairs, contrasting the dark patina of the original wood.
